BACKGROUND

Jeremy's not only a best friend to me but also a brother. He is the best example of a man and a father figure. We attended high school together in the suburbs of Chicago.  I am very grateful to have him on the show today. This podcast will give you information on the pharmaceuticals and other harmful materials that hurt our bodies as well as the environment, not over-specializing in one sport and how other sports are good for cross-training and can lower the rate of injuries and really benefit your primary sport. We will also discuss the best traits for athletes to stay healthy and be the best that they can be as well as the common injuries and what to be aware of and how to avoid them.

BIO

Born, Jeremy Jay Hoff,  on November 2, 1980 in Chicago, IL., USA.

Then attended Rutgers University In New Jersey where he met his wife and he also played on the Men’s Volleyball team. He earned the “Male Athlete of the Year Award” in 2002. Jeremy is also on the Rutgers University Hall of Fame. He holds records in all stats except assists and kills (no. 2).

MEANININGFUL QUOTE

"When the game is on the line, I don't want the ball in anyone else's hands, not in anyone else's hands in the world." - Larry Bird

SPECIAL INTERESTS:

Nutrition, intelligence/learning/psychology

BIGGEST INFLUENCERS:

Mike Hulett, high school volleyball coach and coach of the Team USA Olympic sitting volleyball team

MOST GRATEFUL FOR:

My wife and her motivation to look beyond my college career and look forward to my future

Key Discussion Points:

  • What are some common injuries and mistakes you see people making?

  • What can athletes do to prevent these reoccurring injuries?

  • In your opinion, as a parent, what would be some of the better sports to get a nice array of exposure?

  • What are some of the best traits you see in healthy athletes?

  • What is your opinion on the various diets out there? (Paleo for example)

  • What do you feel is overlooked in the industry pertaining to health?

  • Can you give some examples of good fats vs bad fats?

Key Lessons:

  • Have confidence and strive to be better than your opponent

“It’s not always about being the best in the world, but it’s about being better than the guy next to you” JH @ 19:15

  • We need to let our bodies do what they were designed to do

  • You have to give your body time to heal itself

“Any of those anti-inflammatory medicines really inhibit the body’s natural ability to heal itself, but they cover up pain that might be your body saying you shouldn’t be doing what you’re doing.” JH @ 29:49

  • Figure out where you want to go and how far you want to take your sport

  • The game is not as important as your overall health

  • Don’t specialize in one sport too young, get out and play multiple

  • Kids should participate in sports that involve full body fitness, cardiovascular health, and muscular health.

“Track and Field, running track is by far the most effective sport to improve everything else that you do.” JH @ 35:18

  • You always have to be careful about over training and fatigue which can lead to poor form, technique and injury

  • In any sport and life in general, sleep and nutrition are very important

“In season or in the moment, if you’re not getting enough sleep, your body is not going to heal adequately.” JH @ 41:15

  • What we put in your bodies has a huge effect on how they operate or even how they heal

  • We need to amplify our body’s natural healing process, not alter it.

BACKGROUND

I had the pleasure of meeting Momir at a movie set in Slovenia. It was a filming of a Serbian Basketball film where Team Yugoslavia that won the World Championships back in the day, had defeated the USA Men’s Basketball Team. I was acting as one the Team USA starting basketball players, and Momir's character was the Team USA head coach.  As this was my first experience getting to know him, he was very professional, has very good English, and shows great work ethic in everything he does. In this episode you will learn how to sell yourself as a professional or amateur athlete and Momir has excellent solutions to get you going.

  • What was the moment you realized that you reached the right path?

  • Why did you think ItsMyPlay.com was needed?

  • How would it look if you don’t keep track of what you’re posting on your social media and how could teams view you after seeing a negative impression?

Key Lessons:

  •    An athlete is their own entrepreneur

“They are representing themselves and in a way its a business. And so whatever they are pursuing, a scholarship, a professional contract, in a way they are entrepreneurs."    -MG @ (11:51)

  • Pursue opportunities to network and meet with people that can be your mentors

  • Mentors can motivate in more than one way and help you have a balanced and healthy career

  • Being persistent is key

“the main advice from experienced and successful people was being persistent and through all the challenges that in most cases are going to count and you are going to face.” -MG @ (12:20)

  • Take advice and tips from others even if they are in the same field, industry, or business as you.

“Every constructive advice is worth a lot of money”- MG @ (16:04)

  • Athletes as well as everyone recognize the negative people in their life and avoid surrounding themselves with them

  • Positive Energy is very essential to our lives and can be sucked away by negative people

“It gives us that boost, it makes us wake up at 5am, it makes us work hours and train long hours.” -MG @ (12:34)

  • Finding time to mediate will keep your body and mind healthy.

  • Try to avoid uncertainty and impatience, as it can be destructible mentally and physically

  • Ask others who you think that can help you, but also be ready for criticism

GUEST'S TIP JAR

What personal habit contributed most to your success?

Prioritize the night before each new day and find the time during the week to meditate, visualizing where you want to be.

What is the best advice you ever received?

"When you think there is no chance and all the percentages are down or there is no more air to breathe, that’s where things are handed, that’s where things will start going for you. Be persistent and don’t give up on your dreams."

How do add value to other people?

"There are no rules to it. We all should be aware of people around us. These are spontaneous acts of kindness. The other day I saw old lady sitting down on the sidewalk waiting for the bus. It was raining and she was soaking wet. The bus station didn't have the bench and roof cover. I stopped and offered to drive her home. She accepted. I never plan these actions but I react with my instinct when I see people in the need of assistance. "

VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS!
Use EliteVolley.com's Blog post to create your CV and submit it for FREE HELP!

1. MAKE IT A GOAL

  • Write it down! Put why you want to accomplish it…. what happens if you do.. what happens if you don’t do it… people that you know that did it & people you don’t know but that were the best at it like All-Americans from your country or state.

  • List of top 10-15 places where you would like to go to (inform yourself about schools, academics and coaching staff)

2. PREPARE YOURSELF

Get all of your school records, create your CV, schedule your tests and make sure you’re eligible to play for either the NCAA, NAIA or JUCO schools.

3. RESEARCH

Make a list of possible mentors, coaches, schools & companies that can help you get to school. Use Facebook, USNews.com, the school’s team rosters & an internet search will help you find international/national college recruitment scouts/service like my free service through EliteVolley.com & Elite Sport Students Project.

4. CONTACT YOUR NEW NETWORK

Send your email and CV to all of the mentors, coaches, schools & services ASAP. You can start this at age 15!

5. IMPROVE IN SCHOOL

The better you do in school the more chances and opportunities you will have when you want to go to college. Learn more through MOOCs if you find your subjects easy… Join a school extracurricular club or comittee… Get tutoring from teachers or other students… Take required tests for US Colleges like the SAT & TOEFL… Surround yourself with top students.

6. IMPROVE IN YOUR SPORT

Improve your weaker skills first… Don’t forget your mental skills like visualization or meditation like olympians… Get flexible, stronger & faster… Learn how to “EAT CLEAN” and get the proper amount of sleep and how to recover from exercise… & find a mentor in your sport… pick the best athlete’s in the world to emulate by watching their videos online & don’t be afraid to contact them via twitter, email, Facebook.

8. TRACK PROGRESS

Make sure you are hitting your mini goals each day/week/month!

  • Keep track of schools that are contacting you…

  • Keep records of your improvements physically, nutritionally, educationally, socially, etc.

9. REVIEW GOALS

Every month be sure to re-evaluate your goals to be sure they are still what you want to accomplish. Change anything that needs to change. Mark the ones you completed as COMPLETED! :)

10. BE DISCIPLINED

Be aware of what you are OR are NOT doing everyday to reach your goals… Keep them in places where you can see them. Mirrors, doors, tables, pocket, bags, phone/computer screens, etc.

  • Find someone that is driven to have a great life like you. Ask that you check in with each other each day or each week at a certain time to check that you both have done the mini goals you should be doing every day and week.

BEWARE!

BE CAREFUL WHO YOU TELL & WHO YOU ASK FOR HELP!

    • SELFIES? ALCOHOL? ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES? OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOR? GET RID OF THEM! No Team wants a player that will cause trouble or not have great character!
